Levi Brookshire

Born in North Carolina on 9 February 1830. He married a North Carolina woman, Louisa Jane Long, who was ten years younger, and the two of them turn up in the Georgia mountains in the 1860 census of the 1027th District, Fannin County, with two small children, Mary and Louis. Neither of those two is in the household twenty years later. Mary died at Woodstock in 1935 as Mary Gravett, and no known record says what became of Louis.

He was thirty one when the Civil War began. The United States Civil War Soldiers Index carries a Levi Brookshire serving from Georgia, and his gravestone gives his rank as Private, so he went. What unit he went in is not known.

By 1880 the family had moved south out of the mountains into Cherokee County, into District 1279, and the census taker that year needed thirteen lines for the children: William, John, Webb, Levi, Lucinda, Calvin, Josephene, James, Henry, Edmond, Wesley, Ida and Columbus, ranging from twenty down to one. Henry, the eighth son, was seven years old.

The household then emptied the way households do. In 1900 he and Louisa are in District 817 of the same county with a single child at home, Ida, aged twenty two. By 1910 the roles had reversed and the old couple are living in the house of Orlando S. Morgan at Bells, who had married that same Ida. The enumerator wrote him down as Levy J. Brookshire, aged eighty.

He died on 23 November 1916 and was buried at Acworth, on the Cherokee and Cobb county line. Louisa outlived him by nearly seventeen years.
