James C. Kemp
James C. Kemp was born in England on 3 June 1840. His father was Stephen Kemp and his mother Margaret Skinner, both English. A Find a Grave memorial gives his birthplace as Kent, without a source. When he crossed to America has not been traced.
He married Ruth Calista Edwards, a Pennsylvania-born daughter of John Edwards of Callicoon, New York. The year is uncertain. Find a Grave gives 1873. A compiled FamilySearch tree gives 3 July 1877 at Canonsburg, Washington County, Pennsylvania, far to the west. Their son John Charles was born in 1875, which fits 1873 better.
Their children included John Charles (1875), Stephen G. (1879), Margaret Ada, called Maggie (1881, born at Honesdale) and Bessie (1888). A compiled tree adds Fred Arthur, William N. and Ruth. The family settled in Manchester Township, Wayne County, near Stalker and Kellam's Bridge on the Delaware.
1914 was a hard year for the family. In August his daughter Maggie died at 32, leaving four young children. James fell ill at the end of October. Dr. F. C. Frisbie of Equinunk attended him from 29 October to 3 November. He died at two in the morning on Friday, 6 November 1914, at 74. The cause was apoplexy, a stroke, of eight days, with chronic arteriosclerosis and interstitial nephritis contributing. His wife gave the particulars for the certificate as "Mrs. James Kemp, Stalker Pa." He was buried in Union Cemetery, Manchester Township, on 8 November, by the Equinunk undertaker H. Knapp.
