Margaret Ada Kemp
Margaret Ada Kemp, called Maggie, was born in September 1881 at Honesdale, the county seat of Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Her father, James C. Kemp, was born in England in 1840. Her mother, Ruth Calista Edwards, was born in Pennsylvania in 1849 and was the daughter of John Edwards, a well-known old resident of Callicoon, across the Delaware in New York. The family later farmed at Stalker, near Kellam's Bridge, in Manchester Township.
She was one of a large family. Her brothers and sisters included John Charles Kemp (1875-1958), Stephen G. Kemp (1879-1955) and Bessie Kemp Barriger (1888-1949). A compiled family tree adds Fred Arthur (1880-1965), William N. (born 1886) and Ruth (1891-1972).
About 1902 she married Earl C. Layton, a farmer's son from Equinunk. Their first daughter, Dorothy Pearl, was born at Tanners Falls on 14 March 1903. Frances Bessie followed on 19 June 1905. On 20 March 1907 Maggie bore twins, Harriet and Helen. Harriet lived to 90. Helen died the day she was born. Ernest was born on 26 December 1909.
Maggie died on 12 August 1914 in Manchester Township, aged 32. The cause of her death is not known. A note on the grave of her infant twin says a stillborn son, born 31 July 1914, may be buried in the family plot. If that is right, she died twelve days after giving birth. Her children were eleven, nine, seven and four. Three months later, on 6 November, her father died at Kellam's Bridge.
She was buried in Union Cemetery, Manchester Township. Her stone names her by her own family name first: "MAGGIE A. KEMP / WIFE OF / E. C. LAYTON / 1881-1914." Sixty-two years later her eldest daughter's obituary still gave her the same way, "a daughter of Earl and Maggie (Kemp) Layton."
