James Cole
Born in London about 1626 and brought to Plymouth by his father at seven years old. He appears in the colony's own hand in 1643, when the town enrolled the men able to bear arms and wrote him down as James Cole junior, which is how the record distinguishes him from his father for the next fifty years.
He married Mary Tilson at Scituate on 23 December 1652 and their first child was born there the following year. Then he moved, and kept moving: from Scituate to York in Maine, and probably on to the Kennebec, before turning up admitted a freeman of Plymouth in 1654. He settled after that. He was surveyor of highways in 1656 and again in 1678 and 1685, and in 1690 he was the representative for Plymouth at the colony court.
In 1668 he bought from his father the land running down to and including the lot the Baptist Church now stands on, and with it the inn, which he kept for many years. That is the house Samuel Sewall stopped at in 1698. He died at Plymouth in 1712. His children are listed in the family genealogy with the compiler's own warning attached, that the names probably do not appear in the order of their birth.
