John Cole

Of the Plymouth County Coles, and the man in whom two Cole families meet. The 1962 Chesterfield genealogy opens its Cole section by stating that the descendants of John Cole in that town are from two of his sons: Ebenezer, born 17 October 1711, who married Ruth Churchill, and Joseph, who married Mary Stephens. Joseph was his son; Ebenezer was his grandson, a son of his eldest son John Cole junior. Both households later moved west into the Hampshire hills.

Ebenezer's daughter Joanah married Nathaniel Bryant at Plympton in 1759. Joseph's daughter Susanna married Nahum Niles the same year. Their children, Lydia Bryant and John Niles, married each other in 1792. So this man is John Niles's great grandfather through Joseph, and Lydia Bryant's great great grandfather through John junior and Ebenezer.

He was born on 16 March 1660, a son of James Cole and grandson of James Cole of Plymouth, and died at Plympton on 14 March 1723/4. He married Susannah Gray, daughter of Edward Gray and Dorothy Lettice. The 1908 Cole genealogy gives him an earlier wife, Patience Barber, but Patience Barbor was the wife of his son John. When Plympton was incorporated on 4 June 1707 he was among the first list of voters. Robert Ranson sold him fifteen acres north of the brook out of Doty's Meadows, which seems to have been his homestead, and his will of 13 March 1723/4 leaves all his property to his wife Susannah.
