James Dollahite Woodall
James Dollahite Woodall was born on 21 November 1853 at Nip and Tuck, a settlement near Tatum in Rusk County, East Texas. His parents were Ryal Barber Woodall, called Riley, and Mary Ann Dollahite. His middle name was his mother's maiden name.
His father enlisted in the Confederate cavalry in 1862 and fell sick with camp fever in Louisiana. His mother brought him home, and he died at Nip and Tuck on 5 April 1865. James was eleven. He had an older sister, Mattie, and three younger brothers, William Troy, Wylie Bert and Ira Tommy. The 1959 family genealogy says that as the oldest boy he cleared a farm for his mother and saw his brothers through school.
He became a farmer, a cotton buyer and a merchant in Harrison County. On 4 October 1877 he married Laura Texana Miles, called Teck, the daughter of William Asbury Miles of Hallsville. The county marriage index records them as "J D Woodall and L T Miles." A portrait of the couple was made about 1880.
They had four children: Ira David in 1879, Eva in 1881, William Miles in 1885, and Elza Ruth in 1891. His mother died in 1899. Laura died on 19 February 1918. In 1914 his youngest daughter, Ruth, married Carr Collins at Hallsville.
He died on 22 April 1922, aged 68. He was buried beside Laura in Gum Springs Cemetery at Longview Heights, Harrison County. Their double stone reads "J. D. Woodall / Nov. 21, 1853 / Apr. 22, 1922."
