Mary Ann Dollahite

Mary Ann Dollahite was born on 30 January 1826 in Tennessee. The 1959 family genealogy says near Memphis; a later posting says Henry County.

She married first B. F. Haliburton and had two children by him, Sarah and James. By 1849 she was his widow. On 27 November 1849, in DeSoto County, Mississippi, she married Ryal Barber Woodall, called Riley. They settled at Nip and Tuck, near Tatum in Rusk County, Texas. She had five more children: Mattie in 1850, James Dollahite in 1853, William Troy in 1854, Wylie Bert in 1858 and Ira Tommy in 1861. James carried her surname as his middle name.

In 1862 Riley joined the Confederate cavalry. In Louisiana he caught camp fever. She went down to the camp herself and brought him out and home. He died at Nip and Tuck on 5 April 1865. She was a widow for the second time at thirty-nine, the mother of seven. Her son James, then eleven, cleared a farm for her.

The genealogy says she was "a staunch supporter of the Confederacy, and it is said that at the end of the war she was left with a room full of Confederate money."

She died on 7 November 1899, aged 73. She was buried in Gum Springs Cemetery at Longview Heights, Harrison County, where her son James and his wife were later buried. Her stone is carved with two clasped hands and reads "Mary A. / wife of / R. B. Woodall," with her dates.
