James Edward Herin
James Edward Herin was born on 20 February 1850 in Paulding County, Ohio, a son of James Edmond Herin (1820-1895) and Elizabeth Ann McCully (1823-1897). He grew up near Oakwood in the Black Swamp country, with a brother John L. (1852-1925) and a sister Margaret Jane (1855-1932). In 1870 or so he married Julia Ann Potter, a Paulding County girl of his own age, the daughter of Solomon Potter and Elizabeth Amelia Romine.
They had ten children: Clarissa Mae (1871-1949), Orpha Jane (1872-1961), William Abraham (1874-1929), John Charles (1879-1897), Cyrenius Alva (1882-1968), Robert Alexander (1884-1944), Elizabeth Ann (1886-1967), Edna Pearl (1888-1957), Joshua Clinton (1890-1963) and Henry Harmon (1892-1971). The family moved north to Hesperia, in Oceana County, Michigan, by the late 1880s. His sister Margaret, widowed by Seabury Ford Waid in 1880, married Joseph Benson Robbins at Hesperia on 2 September 1888, and his eldest daughter Clara married Ernest Fletcher Little there in June 1890.
Julia died in December 1924. Eight months later, on 7 August 1924, James went before William Bunnell, a notary public of Oceana County, and swore an affidavit for his sister's pension or estate: that he had been personally acquainted with Seabury Ford Waid, who lived near Oakwood, Ohio, that Waid married his sister Margaret Jane Herin on 6 June 1875 and lived with her until his death in September 1880, that she lived a widow until she married Joseph Benson Robbins on 2 September 1888 at Hesperia, and that he had been present at both weddings and when Waid died. He signed it James Edmond Herin, with his father's middle name, though he was otherwise known as James Edward.
He died in Oceana County on 9 February 1935, eleven days short of his eighty-fifth birthday, and was buried beside Julia in West Hesperia Cemetery, in a lot that holds six of the family under one stone.
