Clarissa Mae Little

Clarissa Mae Herin, called Clara, was born on 17 February 1871 in Paulding County, in the flat Black Swamp country of northwestern Ohio. She was the eldest of the ten children of James Edward Herin and Julia Ann Potter, both of them Paulding County born in 1850 and married young. Her brothers and sisters were Orpha Jane (1872-1961), who married a Fidler, William Abraham (1874-1929), John Charles (1879-1897), Cyrenius Alva (1882-1968), Robert Alexander (1884-1944), Elizabeth Ann (1886-1967), who married a Sturtevant, Edna Pearl (1888-1957), who married a Hunt, Joshua Clinton (1890-1963) and Henry Harmon (1892-1971). The family moved north to Hesperia in Oceana County, Michigan, where her aunt Margaret Jane Herin had married Joseph Benson Robbins in 1888 and where her parents lived out their lives.

On 12 June 1890 at Hesperia, aged nineteen, she married Ernest Fletcher Little, an Indiana man eight years older. Their seven children were born there between 1891 and 1908: Etoile Intha, James Ernest, Averil Lucetta, Gladys Ivy, Russell Lodric, a baby boy who died in 1907, and Theora Ruth.

Ernest died at Flint in 1930 and was brought home to West Hesperia Cemetery. Clara lived on in Oceana County for nineteen more years, burying her father in 1935, and died on 28 February 1949, eleven days after her seventy-eighth birthday. She is buried with Ernest under the stone that reads ERNEST F. 1863-1930, CLARA M. 1871-1949.
