James Hardie
James Hardie was born in Scotland on 2 April 1802. In 1834 he married Agnes Dunlop, ten years younger than he was.
The couple's first child was Margaret. A Margrat Hardie, daughter of James Hardie and Agnes Dunlop, was christened on 27 September 1835 at the Hutchesontown Relief Church in Glasgow, on the south bank of the Clyde. She is very probably this family's eldest. A son Andrew followed about 1839 and a daughter Jennie about 1841, also born in Scotland.
The family crossed to America in the early 1840s. Their daughter Agnes was born on 18 June 1843, and their son William was born at Detroit, Michigan, on 29 September 1845. In later life the family was centered on Toledo, Ohio, where William and Jennie both died.
Andrew died in 1864, aged about twenty five. James lost his wife Agnes on 28 March 1879, and he died himself five months later, on 21 August 1879. They are buried together in Section 27 of Woodlawn Cemetery, Toledo, under a tall granite monument with an urn on top.
