James Meadows
James Meadows was born in Virginia. The censuses give May 1828, and his age at death, ninety one, puts it about 1826. He married Emily about 1853, and the 1900 census counts forty seven years married. A James Meadows married an Emily Edmunds or Edwards in Lawrence County, Ohio, on 22 February 1854, one river crossing from where they farmed, but nothing on that return shows it was this couple.
Their son Jacob died in Mason County on 12 March 1857, and James gave the information to the death register himself. It is the earliest record to name James and Emily together. They had at least ten children. The Mason County birth index enters Martin Morris and Benton L. in 1866, James S. in 1867, Sarah E. on 18 December 1869 and a daughter written Emma N. on 15 May 1874. That last girl was Seminettie, who married Levi B. Fetty in 1890. Sarah E. married William B. Edmonds of Mason County on 3 March 1886, at sixteen.
In 1880 he was farming in Hannan District, Mason County, at forty nine, with Emily and eight children at home: Rhoda J., Sallie E., Adison G., James S., Danil R., Benton L., Minnie S. and Semma N. The Fettys farmed the same district.
He moved down to Guyandotte, and the 1900 census has him there at seventy two. Emily died at Guyandotte in August 1906, aged sixty nine, and James was the informant.
He died at 1735 Third Avenue, Huntington, on 25 June 1917, of chronic valvular heart disease that had been on him two years. He was ninety one and a widower, Emily having gone eleven years before. The informant was J. E. Meadows of Huntington, a son, and he is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery.
The certificate is the standard 1917 form, the first year West Virginia asked for parents again, and it answers half the question. His mother's maiden name is King. The birthplace of both his parents is Virginia.
Their given names are not legible. The state's indexer published them as Ve...N Meadows and N...N King. The father's reads like Winston or Vinson and the mother's like Marian or Mariam, and no Meadows of either name is known in nineteenth century Virginia.
