James Raymond Pinnell
James Raymond Pinnell, who went by J. Raymond, was born on 27 May 1876 at Clarksburg, Harrison County, West Virginia. His parents were James H. Pinnell and Lee Ann Hart, who had married in Upshur County in December 1869. He grew up among the Harts and Pinnells of Romines Mills, a crossroads on Gnatty Creek a few miles from Clarksburg. His older sister Catherine was born there in 1873 and his brother Dorsey Montgomery Pinnell in 1875. A younger brother, David Stuart Pinnell, followed in 1882, and a sister Isabelle.
His mother died in May 1888, when he was eleven. She was thirty seven and was buried at Gnatty Creek Cemetery. Her father, Elijah M. Hart, lived on at Romines Mills until 1908.
The brothers scattered. Catherine married a Curkendall and stayed at Romines Mills. David farmed near Clarksburg. Dorsey went west and died at Andrews, Texas, in 1939. Raymond went north to Saginaw, Michigan.
At Saginaw on 6 January 1909 he married Irene C. Short. She was twenty, born at Corsicana, Texas, the daughter of John B. Short and Matilda Goodrow, both Canadians from Ontario. Their first child, John Hart Pinnell, was born on 12 January 1910 and died on 2 March, seven weeks old. Catherine M. followed in 1912, John Raymond Jr. in 1915, James E. in 1917 and Lee Hart in 1920. Two of the boys carried the Hart name of his mother.
In 1930 the family was living in Saginaw. He was fifty two. His daughter Catherine married in Ohio and died in Saginaw in February 1938, at twenty five.
J. Raymond Pinnell died at Saginaw on 6 November 1939, aged sixty three. His death certificate gives his birth at Clarksburg and names his parents as James Pinnell and Lee Hart. He was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Saginaw, in Section 1, Lot 1716, the lot of his wife's father. His stone reads "FATHER / J. RAYMOND PINNELL / 1876 1939". Irene was buried beside him in 1946.
