James Ross
James Ross was born in Pennsylvania about 1816. In 1880 he was living in Banks Township, Indiana County, the township where his daughter Mahalah later kept house at Lochvale.
His daughter Mahalah Ardella was born on 26 June 1860. When she died in 1932, her son Curtis gave the registrar her father's name as James Ross, born in Pennsylvania, and her mother's maiden name as Mason, also born in Pennsylvania. The mother's given name was left blank.
On the 1880 census James was 64. His household held Susannah Ross, 63, born in New York, and three children: Mahalah Ardella, 18, William Ellsworth, 14, and Ruth Anna, 12. The census taker wrote that the children's father and mother were both born in New York, which disagrees with James's own line and with Mahalah's death certificate. Susannah may be the Mason wife the certificate names. Her age would make her about 51 at Ruth Anna's birth, though, so she may instead be a second wife.
Mahalah married Cornelius Bartlebaugh and stayed in Banks Township. The date and place of James's death are not known.
