Mahalah Ross was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, on 26 June 1860. Her death certificate names her father as James Ross and gives her mother's maiden name as Mason. Both were born in Pennsylvania. Her mother's given name was left blank.

She married Cornelius Bartlebaugh and kept house at Lochvale in Banks Township. They married about 1880. Six of their children are known: Frank Leonard, Pearl Bessie, Lester O., Curt E., Ida and Harry. In 1900 the family was living at Glen Campbell, and in 1910 in Banks Township.

She had lived with diabetes for about ten years. On 27 July 1932 she fell ill with enterocolitis, an inflammation of the bowel. The doctor from Glen Campbell attended her for a week, and she died at home on 3 August 1932 at 6 p.m., aged 72 years, 1 month and 8 days. Her son Curtis, then living at Commodore, gave the details for the certificate. The H. A. Rairigh and Son funeral home buried her on 5 August.

She shares one granite stone with Cornelius in Pine Grove Cemetery. It reads BARTLEBAUGH, CORNELIUS 1853 1943, MAHALAH 1860 1932.
