James William Focht
James William Focht was born in Iowa on 13 October 1872. His parents were Adam Focht and his wife, written Artheila in the census of 1880. That year the family was living in Glenwood Township, Gage County, in southeast Nebraska, with James, aged seven, and his sister Emma E.
He came to Payne County in Oklahoma Territory as a young man, in the years after the land runs opened it to settlement. In 1899 he married Minnie Etta Withers, the daughter of a family at Ingalls. The census of 1900 found them in Clayton Township, Payne County, with a baby son, William. Elva was born in 1903, Charles Edward in 1905, Madge in 1909 and Viola Rose at Ingalls in January 1912. Orval, Albert, Addie, Martha and Velma Pearl followed.
The family moved a few miles north to Glencoe when Viola was very small. In 1920 James and Minnie had seven children at home in Payne County. In 1940 and again in 1950 the couple were in Rose Township, around Glencoe, by then alone. James died at Glencoe on 26 March 1956, aged 83, and was buried in the Glencoe Cemetery. Minnie lived until 1965 and lies beside him under a red granite stone that reads FOCHT.
