Jane Simmons was born at Charleston, South Carolina, on 27 March 1783, by the plaque her descendants set up. Her memorial names her parents as Robert Simmons (1754 to 1850), a first lieutenant, and Anne Miller (1762 to 1843).

In 1802, by her husband's memorial, she married James Roulston, later Raulston, a Virginian who that year sat in the Tennessee legislature at Knoxville. Over the next twenty-four years she bore thirteen children, from William O. in 1802 to Brice Byrne in 1826. Her third son carried her family name: Robert Simmons Roulston. Another son was named John Simmons Roulston.

While her children were small, James was away for six months with the Tennessee militia. He commanded the Third Tennessee Regiment in Carroll's division at the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815 and was discharged at Nashville that May. The family later lived in Jackson County, Alabama, which James represented in the Alabama legislature in 1828, and then in Marion County, Tennessee.

James died in 1844. Jane lived on as a widow for twenty-six years and died in Marion County on 12 May 1870, aged 87. Her memorial places her in the Bean-Roulston Graveyard in Sweden's Cove near South Pittsburg. A bronze plaque erected by their descendants names her as the wife of Colonel James Roulston and lists his services.
