Robert Simmons Roulston
Robert Simmons Roulston was born on 22 July 1806 in Tennessee, by the dates on his gravestone. He was a son of Col. James Raulston, who commanded a Tennessee regiment at the Battle of New Orleans, and of Jane Simmons, whose family name he carried as his middle name. The family wrote its name both ways, Roulston and Raulston. Robert's stone uses Roulston.
He married Margaret E. Bryson, who was born on 14 September 1810. Their son Hugh Lawson White Raulston was born in 1833 and was named for Hugh Lawson White, the Tennessee judge and United States senator who ran for president in 1836. A younger son, James B., followed about 1839, and a daughter, Louisa, about 1848.
Margaret died on 13 August 1859, aged 48 years and 11 months. Her stone calls her "wife of Robert S. Roulston" and carries the line "Thou art gone but not forgotten".
On 30 July 1860 the census taker for the 11th District of Marion County, whose post office was Jasper, found Robert at 54 a widower and a substantial farmer. He owned land worth $9,000 and personal property worth $3,580. Under his roof were James B., 21, and Louisa, 12, and also his son Hugh, 27, with Hugh's wife Sarah and their four small children. The eldest of those grandchildren, six years old, was named Robert S. after him.
Robert was elected to the Tennessee General Assembly for Marion County three times. He died at Nashville, the state capital, on 31 October 1867, during his third term, aged 61 years, 3 months and 9 days. He was brought home and buried in the Bible Cemetery near Comfort in Marion County, beside Margaret. His stone is carved with a weeping willow. Its lower panel records that he died in Nashville while a member of the General Assembly, serving his third term as a member from Marion County.
