Janie Elizabeth Gasway was born in Texas on 2 May 1894. Her parents were Rufus H. Gasway and Mattie Long, of Shelby County in East Texas, near the Louisiana line. Her father died there of typhoid fever on 13 November 1903, when Janie was nine, and her mother was left with four young children. Mattie never married again. Her younger sisters were Alma and Willie Mae and her brother was John Bluitt Gasway.

By 1925 Janie was in Los Angeles County, California, married to John Manugoff, an Armenian immigrant a year older than she was. In January 1925 they were living at 2020 Andreo Street in Torrance, where their first daughter was born. They then settled at Gardena and had three daughters: Maren Jean in 1925, Melvina in 1927 and Zelma Louise in 1932. In 1940 the family had been in the same Gardena house for at least five years.

Janie fell ill in the summer of 1949. Her doctor, C. L. Ahrens of Long Beach, attended her from 1 August, and an operation on 1 October found cancer of the liver. She died at home, 1242 West Compton Boulevard in Gardena, at a quarter past four in the morning of 7 November 1949, at fifty five. She had lived in Gardena twenty four years. John gave the details for her certificate, naming her parents as Rufus H. Gasway and Mattie Long. The McMillan Funeral Chapel of Gardena buried her at Inglewood Park Cemetery on 9 November. A year later her youngest daughter, marrying in Gardena, gave her mother's name as Janie Gasway, born in Texas.
