Rufus Harley Gasway
Rufus H. Gasway was born on 7 May 1874 in Gilmer County, in the mountains of north Georgia. His family came west to Shelby County, Texas, in the pine country along the Louisiana border.
He was about two years old when his parents brought him to Texas, and he grew up in and around Timpson. On 13 July 1893 he married Mattie G. Long, who was four and a half years older. Their children were Janie Elizabeth, born 2 May 1894, Alma in 1896, Willie Mae in 1898 and John Bluitt in 1900.
Rufus died in Shelby County on 13 November 1903, of typhoid fever, aged twenty nine. Typhoid is an infection carried in contaminated water and food. A few weeks before he fell ill he had been, in the words of his obituary, "most promising". He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery at Timpson. His stone is headed FATHER and ends with a verse: "It is sad that one we cherish should be taken from our home." Mattie never remarried and was buried there fifty three years later. His daughter Janie's death record in California, in 1949, names her father as Rufus H. Gasway.
His memorial names his parents as Richard Gasaway Fowler, called Dick, and Martha A. Inge, and his brother as John Richard Gasway. The father appears under both surnames, Gasaway and Fowler.
