Jean Duffourg

Jean Duffourg was born at Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité, a farming village in the Haute-Saône, in eastern France, about 1757. His parents were Pierre Duffourg and Antoinette Gabriel. He spent his life there as a laboureur, a farmer who worked his own ground with his own plough team.

On 7 January 1778 he married Jeanne Quivogne in the parish church of Neuvelle, the first wedding of the year. He was twenty-three and she was twenty-four. The curé, Richard, called him the "fils communier" of Pierre Duffourg, laboureur, and of the late Antoinette Gabriel. A communier was a grown child who still lived and worked within the family's household community, holding the farm in common with the father. His father was there to consent and was the first witness. Jeanne was the daughter of Pierre Quivogne, laboureur, and Anne Mourey. Her father, her brother François and her brother-in-law Jean Chement were the other witnesses. Jean signed "J. Dufour".

Their daughter Claudine was born on 17 August 1780 and baptized the next day by the same curé. Her godfather was Jean Chemant, a farmer of the village. Her godmother was Claudine Quivogne, unmarried, daughter of Pierre Quivogne, a farmer, and the child's aunt on her mother's side.

The Revolution came when he was in his thirties. From 1792 births, marriages and deaths at Neuvelle were kept by the mayor instead of the curé, and dated by the new republican calendar. So his own death is dated the fifth of ventôse in the year XI. He died at five in the morning on that day, 24 February 1803, aged 46. The death was reported by Jean Chemant, his brother-in-law, a cultivator at Neuvelle. The entry calls him the son of Pierre Duffourg and Antoinette Gabriel.

Four years later his widow stood beside their daughter Claudine at the town hall and consented to her marriage to Jean François Chevalier of Soing. The bride's uncle Jean Baptiste Quivogne, fifty-five, and her cousin Jean Baptiste Quivogne, thirty-nine, signed as witnesses.
