Claudinette Duffourg

Claudine Duffourg, called Claudinette in later family records, was born at Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité in the Haute-Saône, in eastern France, on 17 August 1780. She was baptized the next day by the curé, Richard. Her father, Jean Duffourg, was a laboureur, a farmer with his own plough team, and her mother was Jeanne Quivogne. Her godfather was Jean Chemant, a farmer of the village, and her godmother was her mother's unmarried sister, Claudine Quivogne, whose name she was given.

Her father died on 24 February 1803, when she was twenty-two. Four years later, on 23 February 1807, she married Jean François Chevalier of Soing, a village on the Saône a few miles to the south, at the town hall of Neuvelle. He was twenty-eight and the son of a landholder at Soing. Her mother stood beside her and consented. Her uncle Jean Baptiste Quivogne and her cousin of the same name were among the witnesses. She signed the entry herself, which her godmother had not been able to do at her baptism.

The couple made their home at Neuvelle, where her husband farmed. Her son Jean François was born there in April 1819. She was widowed in May 1832 and kept house at Neuvelle with her son. In May 1837 she went with him to Grandvelle and gave her consent to his marriage, as French law required for a groom of eighteen.

She died at Neuvelle on 10 January 1850, aged sixty-nine. Five months later her son married again, and the mayor wrote her death into his marriage entry.
