Jean François Chevalier was born about 1778, the son of Jean François Chevalier, a landholder at Soing, and Jeanne Chement. Soing is a village on the Saône in the Haute-Saône, in eastern France, a few miles south of Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité. His mother died at Soing on 24 January 1806, and he went on living there with his father.
On 23 February 1807, aged twenty-eight, he married Claudine Duffourg at the town hall of Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité. She was twenty-six, the daughter of the late Jean Duffourg, a cultivator of Neuvelle, and of Jeanne Quivogne. His father came and gave his consent, and her widowed mother gave hers. The banns had been read on two Sundays that month at Neuvelle and at Soing. Two of his uncles by marriage witnessed for him, and the bride's uncle and her first cousin, both named Jean Baptiste Quivogne, witnessed for her. Both of them signed the entry.
He settled at Neuvelle, his wife's village, and farmed there as a cultivator. In April 1819 he went before the mayor of Neuvelle to declare the birth of their son, also named Jean François, and signed the register himself. He died at Neuvelle on 2 May 1832, aged about 53, leaving his widow with the boy of thirteen. When that son married at Grandvelle in 1837, the register called him the son of the late Jean François Chevalier, in his lifetime a landholder.
