Jean Michel Hutzler was born in Paris on 13 nivôse of the year IV of the French Republic, which was 3 January 1796. His father, also Jean Michel Hutzler, was a mason, and his mother was Anne Laur. By the 1820s the family was back in Alsace, at Oberentzen, a farming village of the Haut-Rhin in the canton of Ensisheim.

On 5 October 1826, at Oberentzen, he married Françoise Burgy, a day laborer of twenty-six from Logelheim, near Neuf-Brisach. He was thirty and worked as a day laborer himself. Because he had been born in Paris, he had sent for proof of his birth: an extract delivered on 25 November 1820 by the chief clerk of the tribunal of the Seine. His parents were both living and stood in the mayor's office to give their consent. Françoise's father, Pierre Burgy, had died at Logelheim in 1814, and her widowed mother, Marie Anne Lolle, came from Logelheim to consent. The banns had been read at Oberentzen, Logelheim and Oberhergheim. The witnesses were Joseph Schneiderlin, a cooper; Jean Jaeggy, a farmer; Blaise Kliber, the groom's brother-in-law; and Antoine Meyer. The groom signed "Michael Hutzler," and his father signed beside him.

Their children were born at Oberentzen: Marie Catherine in 1827, Jean Michel in 1829, who died at sixteen months, a second Jean Michel in 1831, Rose in 1834, Therese in 1837, Françoise in 1838 and Martin on 11 November 1841.

In February 1852, at fifty-six, he took a passport at Oberentzen for America, and that year the family came to the Alsatian colony at Castroville. On 13 March 1856 the district court of Medina County granted him citizenship. In 1860 he was living in Castroville town with his wife and his son Martin. His daughter Françoise married Laurent Haby at Castroville in 1857.

He died in Medina County on 10 January 1865, a week after his sixty-ninth birthday, and was buried in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery at Castroville.
