Martin Hutzler
Martin Hutzler was born on 11 November 1841 at Oberentzen, a village in the Haut-Rhin, the southern half of Alsace, by a compiled family record drawn from the village registers. His parents were Jean Michel Hutzler and Françoise Burgy, by the same record. In 1852, when Martin was ten, the family took passports at Oberentzen and came to Texas, to the Alsatian settlement Henri Castro had planted at Castroville on the Medina River. In 1860 he was living with his parents in Castroville town.
On 24 October 1867, in St. Louis Catholic Church at Castroville, he married Marie Barbe Vonflie. She was an orphan of twenty-one from Gundolsheim, another Haut-Rhin village, whose father had been killed by Indians in 1855. The couple settled on a farm about three miles west of Devine, in the south of Medina County, and stayed there the rest of their lives. Barbara lived near Devine for almost half a century, by her obituary.
They had at least eight children: William Henry in 1869, Alvina Mary in 1871, Catherine, called Kate, in 1873, Henry Martin in 1876, George William in 1878, Mary Louisa in 1881, Joseph Albert in 1882 and Edward Frederick in 1885. Mary Louisa married Frederick Carl "Fritz" Haass, and her death certificate in 1966 names her father as Martin Hutzler and her mother as Barbara Vonflie.
Martin died before his wife, and some years before. When Barbara died in April 1919, the Devine paper said that "the husband, Martin Hutzler," had preceded "her to the grave many years." The date and place of his death and burial are not known.
