Jeanne Françoise Simon

Jeanne Françoise Simon was born at Grandvelle-et-Perrenot in the Haute-Saône, in eastern France, and her birth was entered in the register on 20 October 1819. Her parents were Pierre Simon, who owned land there, and Françoise Vienney. Her father died at Perrenot on 7 December 1824, aged thirty, when she was five and her baby brother Pierre was eight months old. She grew up with her mother at Perrenot, the hamlet joined to Grandvelle.

On 16 May 1837, at the town hall of Grandvelle, she married Jean François Chevalier of Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité, a young landholder of eighteen. She was seventeen years and six months old. Because both were minors, her widowed mother came with her and gave consent, and so did his. The banns had been read in both villages on the Sundays of 30 April and 7 May.

Her first child, a son, was born at five in the morning on 10 May 1838, in her mother's house at Perrenot. He was named Pierre Jean Baptiste, the Pierre for her own father, and he grew up to be the Peter Chevalier who farmed in Kansas. She had at least three more children, Justin Laurent, Annette and Claude François Jean Baptiste.

She died at Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité on 16 February 1847, aged about 27. Her son Pierre was eight. About ten years later her husband took his second family, and the children of his first, to Kansas.
