Jeanne Quivogne

Jeanne Quivogne was born about 1753 into a farming family of Neuvelle-lès-la-Charité, in the Haute-Saône, in eastern France. Her father, Pierre Quivogne, was a laboureur, and her mother was Anne Mourey.

On 7 January 1778, aged twenty-four, she married Jean Duffourg, twenty-three, in the parish church of Neuvelle. It was the first wedding of the year. The banns had been read three times, and a fourth time in the congregation that morning. Both her parents consented, and her father was the first witness for her. Her brother François and her brother-in-law Jean Chement, both laboureurs, also stood witness. She told the curé, Richard, that she could not sign her name.

Their daughter Claudine was born on 17 August 1780. Her unmarried sister Claudine Quivogne was the child's godmother.

Her husband died on 24 February 1803. Four years later, on 23 February 1807, she went with Claudine to the town hall of Neuvelle and consented to her marriage to Jean François Chevalier of Soing. The mayor wrote that the bride was "assisted by Jeanne Quivogne her mother, here present and consenting." Her brother Jean Baptiste Quivogne, fifty-five, and a nephew of the same name, thirty-nine, a cultivator, were witnesses. At the foot of the entry she signed her own name, Jeanne Quivogne, in large careful letters.

She outlived her husband by almost twenty years. She died in her house at Neuvelle on the morning of 13 November 1822, "widow of the late Jean Duffourg." Her son François Duffourg, twenty-six, a cultivator at Neuvelle, and her son-in-law Claude Nicolas Coudry, thirty, also a cultivator there, reported the death to the mayor the next morning and signed the entry.
