Jeremiah Matthews
Jeremiah Matthews, called Jerry, was born on 15 October 1800. He married Jane Williams, known as Jinie or Jennie, in about 1821. She was a daughter of Sherrod Williams of Franklin County, Tennessee. A family periodical makes him a son of James Matthews and Elizabeth Hardy, who married in Brunswick County, Virginia, in 1788. No record confirms it.
He farmed along the Tennessee and Alabama line, in the country around Crow Creek. He owned land and slaves. His neighbour George Rogers's wife remembered him as the best neighbour she ever had.
He and Jane had children born between 1822 and 1839: James, Clamenza, Michael Newton, William Jasper, Elizabeth Mary, Sarah Ann and Lent Sherrod. The family was Methodist and Presbyterian.
He died on 10 May 1845, aged forty four. His son-in-law later remembered the year as 1847. He was buried in the Cumberland Cemetery at Gonce, Jackson County, Alabama. His daughter Sarah Ann was eight.
