Jewett Henry Grady was born on 1 December 1829 in Rockingham County, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. His parents were Ambrose and Mary Grady. In 1850 he was about 19 and living in Pleasant Valley, Rockingham County. Records of his life spell his name Jewett, Jewit, Jewet and Juett.

By 1860 he had moved south to Botetourt County. There, on 22 January 1860, he married Lucinda Faris. Their daughters Nancy Catherine, called Carie, Mary Alice and Lelia were born in the 1860s.

On 1 March 1862 Jewett enlisted at Fincastle, the Botetourt county seat, as a private in Company D of the 11th Virginia Infantry. He was 32, stood five feet eight, and gave his home as Botetourt County. The 11th Virginia had been raised in May 1861 from Campbell, Botetourt, Montgomery, Fauquier, Culpeper and Rockbridge counties and served in Kemper's Brigade of Pickett's Division. Three months after he enlisted, on 31 May 1862, he was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines, east of Richmond, where the Union and Confederate armies fought to a standstill in the swamps before the city. He was back on the rolls afterward, sick in the summer of 1863, the season of Gettysburg, and present or accounted for on every roll from then on.

On 1 April 1865 Union cavalry and infantry broke Pickett's lines at Five Forks, south of Petersburg. The defeat cost Lee his last railroad and forced him to abandon Richmond the next day; he surrendered at Appomattox eight days later. Jewett Grady was taken prisoner at Five Forks and on 4 April was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, the largest Union prison camp for Confederates, on a sandy spit where the Potomac meets the Chesapeake Bay. He took the oath of allegiance there on 27 June 1865 and was released.

Back in Botetourt he farmed. On 23 December 1869 he married again, to Mary Elizabeth Dooley, who was 17. He was about 40. Over the next 23 years they had ten children: Lula, Bertie Lee, Sarah Melissa, Willie, Jeanettea Pearl, Rosa, Sallie, Nora Edith, Pernie Mae and James Ambrose. Rosa died at two. James Ambrose, the only son, was born in 1893, the year his father died.

Jewett Henry Grady died in Botetourt County on 3 April 1893, at 63, and was buried in the Brick Union Cemetery near Troutville. A low stone carved GRADY marks the family plot.
