Willie S. Grady
Willie S. Grady was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, on 10 July 1877. Her parents were Jewett Henry Grady, a farmer who had fought for the Confederacy, and his wife Mary Elizabeth Dooley, called Mollie. Her father was 47 when she was born and her mother 25. Willie was one of a long run of Grady children: Lula, Bertie, Sarah Melissa, Willie, Pearl, Rosa, Sallie, Edith, Pernie and James Ambrose were all born between 1870 and 1893. Her father died in 1893, when she was 15.
On 12 March 1901 she married John Samuel Burger, a 28 year old farmer, at her mother's house in Botetourt County. The license gives her age as 24 and names her parents as Jewett and Mollie Grady. The minister was Jonas Graybill of the German Baptist, or Dunkard, Church, the church her mother belonged to at Troutville.
Willie and John farmed around Bonsack in the Big Lick district of Roanoke County. She bore nine children between 1901 and 1919: Nettie Priscilla, Grace, Oscar, Doarse, Paul, Roy, Pauline, Price and Frances. A studio photograph shows her seated in a dark satin dress and wire spectacles, with her son Oscar standing beside her in a white shirt and tie. Oscar died in 1926, at about 21.
In December 1922 the Roanoke World-News listed "Mrs. Willie Burger, of Bonsack" among the seven surviving daughters of her mother, Mrs. Mary Grady.
Willie S. Burger died at her home at Bonsack on the morning of Saturday, 31 August 1929, of cancer. She was 52 years, 1 month and 21 days old. Her funeral was held from the Brethren church in Roanoke on the Monday, and she was buried in the Bonsack cemetery. The Bedford Bulletin's notice named her survivors as her husband and the children, "all of Bonsack." John lived another fifteen years and was buried beside her.
