Joan Scotto
Joan Scotto was the first wife of Thomas Scotto of Boston. They were married by 1639. Her maiden name is not in any surviving record. A Clarke family genealogy of 1884 calls her Joan Sandford, but the name may have been borrowed from her husband's mother, who married a Sanford as her second husband.
She joined the First Church of Boston on 19 September 1641, entered as "Joan Scottoe the wife of our brother Thomas Scottoe." The Boston town records name her as the mother of six children. Her first son, Thomas, was baptized in December 1639. A second Thomas, born in June 1641, was "& then buried," and a third, born in March 1642, was "& then buried" too. A son John was born on 2 May 1644, another Thomas on 3 March 1647, and Mehitable early in February 1649. Mehitable was baptized on 11 February 1649, "aged about 4 days."
Joan died before December 1655, when her husband's second wife Sarah bore a son. Her daughter Mehitable married Andrew Clarke in 1671 and gave the name Scotto to one of her own sons.
