Joanna Cory
Joanna Cory was born on 29 October 1751 in New Jersey. The Corys were an old Elizabethtown family with farms around Westfield. Her brother Parkhurst Cory lived at Stony Hill, in Warren Township, on the far side of the first Watchung ridge from Westfield. A local history of 1851 names Parkhurst's father as John Cory, so Joanna was probably John Cory's daughter. No record names her parents directly.
On 3 June 1772, at twenty, she married Isaac Tucker at the Presbyterian church in Westfield. The register spells her name Johannah Cory. Isaac was a son of Warner Tucker of Westfield and his wife Elizabeth Lambert. Warner died the following winter without a will. Isaac himself was dead by 1786, but when he died is not recorded. No children of this marriage are known.
On 4 December 1786, as Johanna Tucker, she married David Woodruff at the same church. He was a widower of about forty six with at least one daughter. She was thirty five. Their son John C. Woodruff was born in June 1789. Their son Parkhurst was born on 25 March 1791.
The family moved to Boardman Township in Trumbull County, Ohio, in the Connecticut Western Reserve. They were settled there by 1812. The Church of Christ in Boardman, gathered in 1813 by a missionary from Connecticut, listed her with David among its families. David died on 1 March 1825. On 23 October 1825 Joanna was admitted to the church.
She lived another sixteen years as a widow. She died on 18 July 1841, aged eighty nine. She was buried in Cornersburg Cemetery, where David lies. No stone for her has been photographed.
