John Cory
John Cory lived at Westfield, New Jersey, then a farming district of Elizabethtown in Essex County. The Corys were an old Elizabethtown family.
He is known as a father from John Littell's Family Records of the first settlers of the Passaic Valley, published in 1851. Two of its entries, read together, make him the father of Joanna Cory. Isaac Tucker, it says, "married Joanna Cory, sister of Parkhurst Cory, of Warren Township." Clark Miller "married, first, Miss Cory, daughter of John Cory, and sister of Parkhurst Cory." Littell also lists a John Cory, "brother of Noah and Parkhurst Cory," who married Susan Lyon. No record names John as Joanna's father directly.
Two records fit him. On 30 April 1783 administration of the estate of John Cory of Essex County was granted to David Cory. Nathaniel Pike and Jonathan Cory had taken the inventory on 20 January 1783. On 5 February 1788 Noah Cory, a ward, "son of John Cory, of said Co., deceased," chose John Cory as his guardian. A minor over fourteen could choose his own guardian. That fits Littell's Noah and his brother John.
His wife is not named in any record. His son was christened Parkhurst, which suggests she may have been a Parkhurst, but nothing says so.
