Johannes Peter Riedel
Johannes Peter Riedel was born in 1847 in Herzog, a German Catholic colony on the Volga, the son of Peter Joseph Riedel and Magdalena Kuhn. The colony census of 1857 lists him at ten with his father, 33, and mother, 29. In 1867 he married Anna Maria Braun, a Herzog girl a year younger, and between 1870 and 1889 they had ten children: Margaret Katherine, Amelia, Peter John, Dorothy, John G., Joseph James, Alexander, Michael James and Catherine Marie.
In the autumn of 1887 the family emigrated. The steamship Donau from Bremen landed them at Baltimore on 10 November 1887: Johan, 40, Marie, 39, and the children Catha, 17, Amalie, 15, Peter, 12, Dorothea, 10, Johannes, 7, Joseph, 5, Alexander, 1, and Michel, three months. Alexander appears to have died at the landing of consumption. They went to Kansas, to the new Catholic colony of St. Peter in Graham County, where the Herzog families had taken land, and were farming there in 1900. The Kansas census of 1905 still found Johan and Anna Maria at St. Peter, and he probably died just after it was taken, on 23 April 1905, the date the parish death register gives. He was buried in St. Anthony Cemetery at St. Peter; there is no headstone, and a map of the graves drawn about 1984 does not show him. His widow died at Ellis in 1911.
