Magdalena Kuhn
Magdalena Kuhn was born in 1827 in Herzog on the Volga, a daughter of Peter Kuhn, born 1801, and Magdalena Wasinger. About 1845 she married Peter Joseph Riedel, and the 1857 Herzog census lists her at 29 in his house with their son Johannes. She was widowed in 1869 with five children. In 1880 she appears, a widow of 52, in Hartsook Township in Ellis County, Kansas, with her son Michael, 13, born in Russia, which puts her in Kansas with the earliest Herzog settlers; a passenger list of the Fresia, landing at New York on 19 December 1887, also carries a Magdalena Riedel, 45, with two children, and the two records have not been reconciled. Her son Michael was deaf and mute and lived with his sister Barbara Pfeifer. Magdalena Riedel died in 1889 and is buried in St. Fidelis Cemetery at Victoria, the Herzog colony in Kansas, where her entry in the church death register stands in place of a stone.
