John B. Tipton
John B. Tipton was born in Georgia about 1862. The 1900 census puts it at October 1864, and the 1870 and 1880 censuses both make him a year or two older than that.
He grew up in his uncle's house. The 1870 census has him at seven in Wiley Tipton's household at Hot House in Fannin County, and the 1880 census of Morganton has him there again at seventeen, working on the farm, with the relationship column reading nephew. Both his parents were born in North Carolina.
He married Josephine Crawford about 1883. She had been living fifty households away in her stepfather Berry Carter's house. They raised at least eight children in the Fannin County mountains. The 1900 census finds them at Blue Ridge, and the 1910 census at Sugar Creek, where the surname of everyone in the house reads Lipton.
Josephine died on 24 February 1919. By 1920 he had moved over the line into Gilmer County, where the census of District 1136 has him with his daughters Cara and Monnie. In 1930 he is at Cherry Log in Gilmer, sixty eight, with a second wife, Margarett E. His own death has not been found.
His first wife's grave memorial calls him John Brown Tipton and makes him a son of Wiley Tipton and Telitha Adeline Mull. The census taken in that very house in 1880 says nephew, and Wiley's own grave memorial lists eight children without him. Wiley was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina on 15 June 1829, served as a Confederate private, and died in Fannin County on 10 August 1911.
