John Denney
John Denney was farming in Springfield Township, Gallia County, Ohio when the census taker came in 1850. He gave his age as fifty and his birthplace as North Carolina. His wife Margaret was forty and born in Virginia. Eleven of their children were still under the roof, from Henry, twenty nine, down to a Margaret who was one.
The third son in that house was entered as Isariah, twenty two. That is Azariah Denney, who married Mary Sprouse in the same county the next summer and was still farming Springfield Township thirty years later.
His wife's maiden name comes from their son Samuel. When Samuel died at Pataskala in Licking County in December 1919, his death certificate named his parents as John Denney and Margaret Short. The same certificate gives John's birthplace as Ireland. That is an informant's word seventy years on, against John's own answer of North Carolina in 1850.
A Denney family genealogy compiled in the twentieth century calls him Jordan or John. It gives his marriage to Margaret Short in Gallia County on 24 April 1821, and makes him a son of James Denney and Rebecca Vanderpool, who came up from Surry County, North Carolina. No record of his own time has been found that names his parents. When and where he died is not known. Margaret was living with Samuel in Morgan Township in 1880.
