John Ellery
John Ellery was a labourer of Wool Knoll, in the parish of Hovingham in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The parish entries call him a labourer, and once, in 1730, a farmer.
His children were baptized at Hovingham over eighteen years. John came first, on 21 August 1726. George followed on 7 April 1728 and was buried on 6 May 1734, aged six. Mary was baptized on 20 December 1730, Thomas on 2 December 1733, Anne on 13 June 1736, Margaret on 4 April 1742 and Susanna on 15 April 1744. Susanna was buried on 15 July 1753. His wife's name is not given in any of the entries.
His daughter Anne was very probably the Ann Ellery who married Robert Myres at Hovingham in 1774. An "Ann Myers, aged 83" was buried at Hovingham in 1819, born in the year of Anne's christening, and no other Ann Ellery of that age appears. Her son was Thomas Myers, LL.D., professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Margaret married Mathew Lowther in October 1774. Thomas was probably the Thomas Ellery who married Elizabeth Harrison in 1766 and was buried in 1807.
A "Susanna Ellery, widow of Wool knoll, a poor widow" was buried at Hovingham on 15 March 1739/40. She was not John's wife, since he had children after that date. She was probably his mother.
John Ellery was buried at Hovingham on 8 March 1747/8, entered as a labourer. His youngest child was not yet four. Before 1752 the English year began on 25 March, so dates from January to March were often written with both years.
