John Fishburn
John Fishburn was born in Franklin County, Virginia, on 21 December 1807. He married Faitha Ann Roark, a Tennessee girl nine years younger than he was, about 1834.
The birthplaces of their children trace the family's road west. Their daughter Sarah was born in Kentucky about 1835. Their son Reuben was born in Missouri about 1837. By 26 November 1839, when their son Peter was born, they were in McDonald Township, in what became Jasper County in the far southwest of the state. Jasper County was organized in 1841, so the Fishburns were there before the county was.
In 1850 the census taker found them at Sarcoxie, in Jasper County. John was forty three and born in Virginia. Faith was thirty three and born in Tennessee. At home were Sarah, fourteen, Reuben W., thirteen, and Peter, ten. A daughter Nancy, born about 1835, had died in 1846.
The sons grew up on the frontier and went to war on the Union side. Peter served as a corporal in the Missouri militia and then the Fifteenth Missouri Cavalry. Reuben is remembered on his gravestone memorial as Captain Reuben W. Fishburn.
John Fishburn died in Jasper County on 13 January 1876, aged sixty eight. He was buried in the Avilla Cemetery. Faitha died four years later and was buried there too, as was their son Peter in 1909.
