John Fiske
John Fiske lived at St James, one of the small parishes of South Elmham, in Suffolk. He was probably born about 1580. He was the son of William Fiske and his first wife, Anna Austye of Tibenham in Norfolk. His grandfather, Robert Fiske, a wheelwright, was said to have fled for his religion in Queen Mary's reign.
He married his second cousin, Anne Lawter, daughter of Robert Lawter and Mary Fiske. Their son John was baptized at St James on 20 March 1608 and their daughter Anne on 1 April 1610. Martha and William followed. A son Nathaniel died young and was buried at St James in March 1614. The younger John went to Peterhouse, Cambridge, and took his degree in 1629.
He was buried at St James in May 1633, entered in the register as "Goodman Fyske." Goodman was the title of a householder below the rank of gentleman.
Four years later his widow took all four children to New England, and died on the way. Cotton Mather wrote of the family in his Magnalia as descended from persecuted ancestors. His son John became the first minister of Wenham and later of Chelmsford. His son William became Wenham's first town clerk. His daughter Anne married Francis Chickering of Dedham.
