John Fox
John Fox was born 23 November 1832 in Bavaria. By his death certificate's count he had lived sixty years in the place where he died, which sets his arrival in Tywappity Township, the flat river country of Mississippi County, Missouri, at about 1859, a young German among Kentucky and Tennessee-born cotton farmers. How he came, and under what German name, is not known.
He married Caroline Winsmore, a Delaware-born woman, and between about 1860 and 1870 they had five children: William Henry, George, Mary Ellen, Annie and Elizabeth, called Lizzie. Caroline died when Lizzie was small, and the 1880 census found John a widower of forty three with all five children still at home, a hired housekeeper named Sarah Harris keeping the domestic side of a house with no mother in it.
He outlived his wife by four decades and outlived three of his children. George died in August 1909; William was killed by a gunshot in July 1910; Lizzie died of tetanus in 1918. John himself died 15 April 1919, of a cancer of the cheek and eye that had run a year and a half, attended by no physician in his final illness. He was buried the next day at Oak Grove in Charleston, where William, Lizzie and Mary Ellen also lie. His parents' names were unknown to the family: his certificate answers Don't Know for both.
