Johannes Geist was born on 6 June 1840 in Obermonjou, a German Catholic colony on the Volga in the province of Samara, the fourth of the six children of Michael Geist and Anna Marie Kohl. On 28 October 1863 he married Catharina Barbara Gerber at Friedental, a daughter colony east of the river, where her family had moved from Mariental. Their first child, Alexander, was born in 1865. In the 1870s the family joined the Catholic emigration to Kansas and settled at Victoria in Ellis County, the colony the Herzog people had founded and named for their church of St. Fidelis. His widowed mother came too and died at Victoria in 1882. Eight more children were born: Anna Katherine, Anastasia, Adam, Michael, Christina, Maria, Anna Maria and Jacob, the last in 1891. His daughter Anastasia married Peter John Riedel in 1893.

John Geist died on 10 June 1915, four days past his 75th birthday. He and Catharina, who died in 1932, lie in St. Fidelis Cemetery at Victoria under a tall granite stone carved with a cross and two candles under the words OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN: GEIST, JOHN, JUNE 6, 1840, JUNE 10, 1915; CATHARINE, DEC. 24, 1846, APR. 6, 1932.
