John Gibson was at Cambridge, Massachusetts, by 1635. That year he owned a house on the east side of what is now Sparks Street, a little south of Vassall Lane. Soon afterwards he added three acres, so that his land reached across to Garden Street.

By his wife Rebecca he had five children, all baptized at Cambridge. Rebecca was born about 1635 and married Charles Stearns in 1654. Mary was born in March 1637/8, married John Ruggles of Roxbury in 1655 and died in 1674. Martha was born in April 1639 and married Jacob Newell of Roxbury in 1657. John was born about 1641, and Samuel on 28 October 1644.

His wife Rebecca was buried at Roxbury on 1 December 1661. On 24 July 1662 he married Joanna, the widow of Henry Prentice.

His son John died in 1679 at thirty eight. That son's widow lived on until 1713, long a pensioner on the bounty of the church. In 1688 the old man signed a petition to the King. He died in 1694, aged ninety three.
