Rebecca Gibson
Rebecca Gibson was born about 1635, the eldest of the five children of John Gibson of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and his wife Rebecca. She was baptized at Cambridge. Her father owned a house on the east side of what is now Sparks Street, and his land ran across to Garden Street.
On 22 June 1654 she married Charles Stearns of Watertown. He was a widower. His first wife, Hannah, had died in 1651 and left him a son, Samuel. Within two years of the marriage Rebecca was "grievously afflicted with a mental disorder, imagining herself to be under the power of witchcraft."
Her first two children were born at Cambridge: Shubael on 20 September 1655 and John on 24 January 1657. Then the family moved to Watertown, and in February 1658/9 she was a member of the Watertown church. Isaac was born in 1658 and Rebecca in 1661. Charles was slain in the King's service before 1695. Martha and others followed. Her daughter Rebecca married Thomas Traine of Watertown in 1693 and lived to eighty five.
Her mother died in 1661, and her father married again the next year. When Rebecca herself died is not recorded.
