John Henry Jones
John Henry Jones was born on 8 August 1847 in Alabama. His death certificate names his father as John Jones, also born in Alabama. His son, who gave the information, did not know his grandmother's name.
His family gives his parents as John F. Jones and Sally Davis, and says he married more than once, once in Angelina County, Texas, in 1876. His death certificate gives his wife as Riller Patterson. His daughter Elizabeth, born in Alabama in 1882, carried Riller as her middle name.
John worked as a coal miner. His children scattered across the coal country. Elizabeth married Lewis Howard Hulvey in the Choctaw Nation of Indian Territory in 1898, and his son Grover Cleveland Jones also settled in Oklahoma. John spent his last years in the mining town of Gypsy, in Harrison County, West Virginia, in the home of his son John Jones Jr.
He died there at 7 in the morning on 7 April 1929, aged 81. A local paper reported it the next day:
"John H. Jones, 82, died at 7 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of his son John Jones Jr., of infirmities due to old age. Another son, Cleveland Jones, lives in Oklahoma. There are two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hulvey, who also lives in Oklahoma, and Mrs. Anna Pitney, of Gypsy. Funeral Services were held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home. Interment was made at the Masonic Cemetery at Shinnston, with the Harmer Undertakers in charge."
He was buried on 8 April 1929 in the Masonic cemetery at Shinnston, now called Elkview Masonic Cemetery.
