John Henry Mullins was born on 24 June 1876 in what became Dickenson County, Virginia, the son of Marshall Mullins and Parthina Moore. On 4 June 1896, aged about nineteen, he married Ida May Fleming in Dickenson County. She was sixteen, the daughter of W. J. Fleming and Pat Branham.
In June 1900 the young family lived in Clintwood town: John, 23, May, 19, married four years, and their sons Leondis, 3, born in October 1897, and Linsey, 1. Leondis grew up as Lonnie. More children followed over the next twenty years, among them Hillard B., Lenzie, Muncie, Lannie Mae and Mary June, who married a Porter.
May died on 27 September 1928, aged 48, and was buried in the Flemingtown Cemetery at Clintwood under a stone headed "Our Mother". John married again; his second wife was Rosa Ann. Ten years after May, in June 1938, their son Lonnie died at 39 and was buried in the same ground, and in June 1943 Lonnie's son Hassel, a brakeman killed in the Jenkins mines, was laid beside him. John lived on at Clintwood until 16 December 1956 and died there at 80. He is buried at Flemingtown under a stone that reads "John Mullins, June 24, 1876, Dec. 16, 1956, Gone but not forgotten."
