John Hesson was born in Ohio about 1814 and married Maria Jane Pryor on 20 August 1835 at Goshen Township in Belmont County, on the Wheeling side of the state. He was twenty one and she was eighteen.
By 1880 the two of them were in Guyan Township, Gallia County, a hundred and fifty miles down the river, he sixty six and she sixty four, with Jane, Margaret A. and Rosella in the house. His wife died there in 1895 and her record still calls her married, so he outlived her. When he died is not known.
His name is on the West Virginia death returns of three of his children, who all died within twenty six months of each other across the river in Cabell County. Each return spells his wife differently. None of them disagrees about him.
The licence file survives with the wedding. On 17 August 1835, three days before, a Samuel Hesson stood in front of the Belmont County clerk and affirmed that John Hesson was twenty one, that Maria Jane Pryor was eighteen, that both were unmarried, and that they were *not nearer of kin to each other than first cousins*. He is the only other Hesson named in the file, and a man who can swear to the bride's age as well as the groom's is standing close to one of them. He affirmed rather than swore, which in Belmont County in 1835 usually means a Friend or a Dunker.
