John Hirrlinger
John Hirrlinger was born in Germany in August 1860. He came to Washington, District of Columbia, and married Jacobine Hertzer, who had been born in Germany in 1867. Their first child, Frederick John, was born in Washington in April 1894.
Six children followed one another over thirteen years: Frederick, Dora, Catherine, Henry, John Louis and Lena. The family belonged to the German community of the capital. Their daughters Dora and Catherine were confirmed at the German Reformed church on Tenth Street northwest, Dora in 1913 and Catherine in 1915. In March 1907 Dora went to a children's costume ball at Arion Hall, at Eighth and D streets. She went dressed as a "Schwobamädle," a little Swabian girl, Swabia being the old name for the southwest German lands around Stuttgart and Reutlingen.
In June 1909 John bought lot 21 in block 14 of Long Meadows, a new subdivision in the northeast of the city. He borrowed $450 against it, payable over one, two and three years.
By 1918 the family was living at Bladensburg, just over the District line in Prince George's County, Maryland. John died there on Thursday, 14 November 1918, three days after the armistice that ended the First World War. His death notice gives no cause. The notice called him the "beloved husband of Jacobine Hirrlinger." His funeral was held from his home at Bladensburg, and he was buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery, which the German community of Washington had founded. A German-language weekly in the city listed his death among the week's deaths of the German community.
