John Hopkins

John Hopkins was born in 1769. The family record page of the old Lambeth Hopkins Bible calls him "John Hopkins Sr" and gives the year and nothing more. It was copied and notarized in 1959, when the Bible belonged to a descendant, Bess H. Pearce of California.

His father was Lambeth Hopkins, a planter in Anson County, North Carolina, in 1773, who died in Jackson County, Georgia, in 1798. His mother was probably Priscilla Hopkins, his father's widow and executrix. The Daughters of the American Revolution accept that parentage. Their earlier papers made John the son of a Jonathan Hopkins of Louisa County, Virginia, and they have since marked those lines as errors.

He married Elizabeth Autrey, who was born on 27 January 1771. The Autreys were neighbours of the Hopkinses in Georgia, and a Jacob Autery was one of his father's executors. Their son Lambeth was born on 24 September 1800. Family papers say Lambeth was born in South Carolina; his own later censuses say Georgia.

The family history says the Hopkinses moved west into Tennessee and that John was living at Shelbyville, in Bedford County, in his last years. It says he was wounded by an arrow at the Battle of Talladega in the Creek War and died of the wound in Bedford County. Talladega was fought on 9 November 1813, when Andrew Jackson's Tennessee army relieved a fort of friendly Creeks besieged by the Red Stick warriors. The Bible gives his death as 12 December 1814. No service record has been found.
