Lambeth Hopkins
Lambeth Hopkins was born about 1735. Where is not known.
In 1773 he was a planter in Anson County, North Carolina, on the Yadkin River. On 13 April 1773 he sold a tract of 388 acres on the south side of the river to Daniel Bankson, planter, for three hundred pounds proclamation money. The land began "at a white oake on the Bank of the River and Below a Clift of Rocks above the mouth of Garr Creek." It had been patented to him on 8 November 1771. The deed was proved at the April to July term of 1775. Proclamation money was the colony's paper reckoning, rated below sterling.
He moved south to Georgia. During the Revolution he lived in Wilkes County, on the Georgia frontier, where Patriot and Loyalist militias fought through the war. He served as a sergeant in Captain Robert Carr's company of Colonel John Dooly's regiment. The Daughters of the American Revolution list that service from Davis's roster of Georgia citizens and soldiers.
He later lived in Jackson County, formed in 1796. He was dead by early October 1798. On 4 October 1798 the witnesses to his will swore before James Armstrong, register of probates, that "Lambeth Hopkins late of this County" had signed and sealed it being of sound mind. The appraisers then valued his property. It included four enslaved people, three horses, twenty-three head of cattle, four feather beds with their furniture, a loom, chairs, pewter and farm tools.
His widow Priscilla was executrix, with Jacob Autery and Jacob Bankston as executors. In March 1801 they sued John Combs in Oglethorpe County. Combs had given Lambeth a note in July 1797 promising a large quantity of inspected crop tobacco by Christmas 1798, and had not paid. They claimed $1,440 in damages. The estate was still open in July 1814, when the Clarke County court ordered the three to explain why they had made no legal returns.
His son John, born in 1769, married Elizabeth Autrey. A younger son, Lambeth, died in 1806. A daughter married Sherwood Hodges.
