John Huntting was the eldest son of Elder John Hunting, the first ruling elder of the Dedham church, and of Esther his wife. He was born in England about 1628 and was about ten when the family crossed. His mother's will of 1676 calls him her oldest son, which is how his place in the family is fixed. His trade and his English parish are not known.

He married on 18 April 1671 Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Payne of Dedham. He was about forty three, late for a first marriage, and no earlier wife is recorded. They had nine children in twenty five years: John on 30 May 1672, who died soon; Nathaniel on 15 November 1675; Esther on 19 November 1677; Rebecca on 13 January 1680; Samuel on 14 March 1682; Elizabeth on 2 February 1683; Ebenezer on 1 January 1685; Stephen on 14 May 1688; and Jonathan on 27 January 1696. He was admitted a freeman in 1690, at about sixty two.

He did not hold the office his father held and did not leave Dedham. He died on 19 September 1718, at about ninety. His second son Nathaniel took the family somewhere else entirely. Nathaniel graduated from Harvard in 1693 and was ordained minister of East Hampton on Long Island in September 1699, a pulpit he kept for fifty four years.
